Landscapes and Further Explorations
"Military Reserve Fall"
Oil and wax on linen, 24"x36" 2016
This is a familiar view to so many in Boise who love hiking the hills of the Military Reserve. Here the hills are bathed in late afternoon fall light.
Rachel Teannalach is a contemporary landscape painter based in Boise, Idaho. Originally from northern New Mexico, she has also painted extensively in northern California. Her traveling pack has taken her from Marin County to Iceland and many places between.
Her work is guided by the belief that the observation of nature revives our recognition of beauty and restores our sense of belonging in the natural world. In particular, her work focuses on our relationship with time and place. For Teannalach, painting provides a way to step out of the frenzy that life so easily becomes, to appreciate both stillness and the beauty of passing time. Her work inspires viewers to leave, in W.B. Yeats’ words, “a little space for the rose-breath to fill.”
Teannalach's focus over the last several years has been collaborations with conservation organizations, supporting their efforts to preserve the lands she loves to paint.

This year will be a continued exploration of the junctions between natural and human landscapes. How do we experience nature on a daily basis? How do we romanticize these meeting points and overlaps that are often sites of destruction or intrusion? And where are our encounters with nature those of universal joy and exhilaration?
Highlights of the year were an exhibition at the Boise restaurant, State & Lemp, consisting of 33 paintings and 7 sculptures created specifically for the space. All works sprung from the inspiration of 7 "tinyExpanse" daily paintings. In February, Trouve hosted a Marin County pop-up show - a one night exhibition of over 50 tinyExpanse paintings created in a five day frenzy. The rest of the year was spent preparing for my April 2016 solo exhibition at Gallery five18 in Boise (and growing a baby, to be debuted in February).
In 2014 I created many projects composed of multiple pieces, often created on consecutive days. Each painting in these works honors a specific time and place. Together, the grouping reveals the passing of time that these individual moments compile.
Daily Reminder's of Nature's Vastness
tinyExpanse paintings are a daily practice of meditation and contemplation through visual journaling. These on-site works are a reminder that beauty is available everywhere, you just have to pay attention! The first generation of these paintings were in oil on canvas and measured is 3"x3" or 2.5"x3.5". Currently I am developing the second generation as mixed media works on paper - the first set of nine of these are shown in a grouping below.
One of the sweetest things someone has said about tinyExpanse: "Her ability to capture the essence of an expansive landscape on such a small canvas is like a haiku in oil."
Please note that the paintings below are for examples and may not be available.

Plein Air painting in the Boise Foothills.
I love to rise before the sun comes up and head out with my paints in time for the first light. In the winter, I stuff a hot water bottle into my coat to keep warm. I work wet-on-wet, or "alla prima," meaning that I complete a painting in one sitting and don't go back and rework details. For me this is in harmony with my focus on immediacy - experiencing and expressing a specific moment in a specific place. Plein Air painting is the foundation for the larger works I complete back in the studio. Read more about my Plein Air process on my blog.
