Contemporary Landscape Paintings
"Estranged - Corona Diptych" (oil and wax on canvas)
Estranged is a series of paintings about social distancing experiences of Covid19. The Corona Diptych above might look familiar - it is a take-off on Andy Warhol's "Marilyn Diptych." The project was funded by the COVID Cultural Commission, and will be exhibited April 23rd at the Greenbelt Market in Garden City, and for the month of May at Meriwether Cider House in downtown Boise. More information below.
"It is only by selection, by elimination, and by emphasis that we get at the real meaning of things." Georgia O'Keeffe
Rachel Teannalach is a contemporary landscape painter based in Boise, Idaho. Her work is characterized by bold, gestural brushstrokes and her ability to evoke the emotional quality of the places she paints.
Teannalach's work is guided by the belief that the observation of nature revives our recognition of beauty and restores our sense of belonging in the natural world. Her work inspires viewers to leave, in W.B. Yeats’ words, “a little space for the rose-breath to fill.”
Her focus over the last several years has been collaborations with conservation organizations, supporting their efforts to preserve the lands she loves to paint.
Teannalach is known especially for her "tinyExpanse" daily paintings, which can be purchased on Etsy, along with small works and prints. Her work also encompasses large scale landscapes and occasional cityscapes and portraiture.

Welcome to my studio...
Plein Air Process
Plein Air painting in the Boise Foothills.
I love to rise before the sun comes up and head out with my paints in time for the first light. In the winter, I stuff a hot water bottle into my coat to keep warm. I work wet-on-wet, or "alla prima," meaning that I complete a painting in one sitting and don't go back and rework details. For me this is in harmony with my focus on immediacy - experiencing and expressing a specific moment in a specific place. Plein Air painting is the foundation for the larger works I complete back in the studio. Read more about my Plein Air process on my blog.
