Our lives are filled with invitations to find balance between many contrasting elements - security and independence, organization and flexibility, work and play. The experience of difference and variety that these elements offer can be a source of joy and meaning, as well as difficulty. Through a conversation between abstract and representational painting, my paintings engage the interplay between structure and freedom that both enables and challenges us in every aspect of life. My intention in creating these paintings is to spark creative perspectives on the relationship between human constructs and nature, and in doing so, encourage a more integrated and aesthetic approach to the environments we create. The portraits give me the opportunity to explore the figure in an non-traditional way, bringing out planes of the body through parts of the pattern in a way that surprised me in its references to cubism.
